Almost 70,000 homes in North East Lincolnshire are now using a pair of new recycling bins.
The new bins are part of the Council’s massive overhaul of its kerbside recycling collections. A total of 134,884 recycling bins have been delivered to 67,442 properties since the end of July.
The main part of the delivery plan ends this week with deliveries to the remaining households happening in the coming weeks.
North East Lincolnshire Council is installing mini-recycling sites at properties including flats and maisonettes where several households share a communal garden. These properties effectively share a group of recycling bins when there isn’t space for every household to have its own set.
The Council wrote to about 2,000 properties without a front garden and restricted access to the rear garden to let them know what is happening with their recycling collections.
Households in these areas where space is a problem were asked if they would like to sign up for the new bins or keep using the recycling boxes. About 375 households said they will take the new bins. These bins will be delivered in the next few weeks.
North East Lincolnshire Council is working with Stallingborough-based recycling company Grimsby Granulation Ltd to collect and recycle unwanted recycling boxes. The boxes are ground into pellets ready to be used to make new products. So far, they’ve recycled 83 tonnes of unwanted recycling boxes.
Cllr Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for Environment and Transport at North East Lincolnshire Council, said:
“In a little over three months we’ve overseen the delivery of new wheelie bins to almost 70,000 households in North East Lincolnshire.
“This is a massive achievement given the added challenges we’ve faced because of the international coronavirus pandemic.
“I’d like to express my thanks to our staff, the bin manufacturer and the delivery company for making this happen and to the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) for their ongoing support and advice.
“I’d also like to thank the people of North East Lincolnshire for making the effort to recycle with the new bins, your contribution can make a big difference.
“Early in December we will be writing to all households to let them know about changes to collection dates over the busy Christmas holiday.
“There will also be information about how we are increasing the range of plastics people can recycle at home, a new weekly food waste collection trial and changes to collection dates.”

Using your new bins
All bins should come with an instructional leaflet. Copies of the leaflet are also on the recycling bins page of the council website at www.nelincs.gov.uk/bins.
Households start using their new bins as soon as they arrive. They replace the three recycling boxes.
Mark your bin with your house number and make a note of the unique reference number on the side of the bins, so you know which is yours.
Households can help by making sure the recycling is clean and put in the right bin. Symbols on the bin lids clearly show what goes in each bin.
Paper and card go in the blue wheelie bin. It replaces the blue box. Plastic bottles, food tins and drink cans and glass bottles and jars go in the grey wheelie bin.
Bin crews will not empty the bins for people who put the wrong items in them.
People can fit more in their bins if they wash and squash plastic bottles and aluminium drinks cans and also break down carboard boxes.
