Helping people feel safe and protecting the environment

The new year will bring proposals to help people feel safe and protect the environment.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, gave an update on further plans to improve the borough at the latest full council meeting, at Cleethorpes Town Hall.

He said: “The council is well placed to protect and enhance our local environment to promote health, pride in the area, business growth and increasing visitor numbers. To achieve this, we propose a range of improvements and increased resources from next year to include the following:

  • To encourage pride in our local area a range of improvements to our service offer are planned in relation to street cleansing, grounds maintenance and weed control to deliver higher quality local environmental standards,
  • Entrance routes and gateways to our towns and villages provide an opportunity to attract investment, increasing visitor numbers and promote pride in the area. We aim to improve maintenance of areas within our control around these important locations as well as dedicate resources to work with private property owners to encourage responsible management of private assets. This will include consideration of enforcement of private sites causing a serious detriment to the amenities of the area.
  • The service is committed to review the current recycling provision with an aim of developing a new local offer, which achieves better outcomes both for our environment, local residents and local street scene.
  • A review of surface water drainage provisions has been completed and recommendations made for a changed gully cleaning routine to increase resources and focus on more frequent cleansing of areas of high risk. This aims to reduce the risk of surface water flooding as far as possible.

“Further work is planned to ensure robust enforcement is in place to address problems enabling local people to be safe and local environment protected. This will include improvements in fly tipping surveillance and evidence gathering to provide a more effective deterrent and reduce impact on communities from waste crime.”
