Labour opposition leader’s comments on Fuller Street bridge misled the public

Labour opposition leader Matthew Patrick’s recent comments in the media about the Fuller Street footbridge have been branded as ‘scaremongering’.

At the recent full meeting of North East Lincolnshire Council, it was confirmed that the bridge is structurally sound and that a feasibility study is taking place.

Councillor Patrick appeared on the front page of the Grimsby Telegraph on July 9, claiming a report had deemed the bridge unsafe and recommended for demolition.

In reality an inspection has confirmed that the bridge is sound and now a study exploring all options for it is being carried out, as reported.

Deputy council leader John Fenty confirmed NELC is responsible for the bridge.

“It is pure scaremongering from the Labour opposition leader to suggest that the footbridge is unsafe.

“The fact is that considerable works have been undertaken in past years leaving only routine remedial works year on year ensuring that the bridge remains safe and fit for purpose.

“Therefore, I cannot understand for the life of me why he would want to mislead the public.”
