New railings installed at speeding hotspot

New railings installed at speeding hotspot

On May 6, you have the chance to shape the future of North East Lincolnshire by voting in the local election.

Here, Martyn Sandford, the Conservative candidate for the Yarborough ward, explains how he identified an issue with unsafe parking and speeding cars, and the happy end result.

“I was walking around the ward to find out what issues there were to attend to after a tip-off that a crossing person probably needed to be installed to help children cross a busy road in the area as they went to and from school.

“I had noticed that one school had safety railings outside their building, but a redundant one outside another school in the ward.

“I and the Portfolio Holder for highways went to investigate and reached out to find out how we could help.

“The school’s site manager said that parked and speeding cars made it hard for children to cross safely. Two weeks before the meeting, a handful of youngsters had had near-misses with cars.

“The children don’t use the main gates where the redundant railings are, as it’s easier for the children to use a side gate.

“We decided for railings to be installed. It was also agreed to extend hatching markings to stop cars parking close to the gate.

“The school says the railings are a success, and unsafe parking has ceased.”
