When you elected the Conservatives to run North East Lincolnshire Council, we promised to be a listening council – and that’s what we continue to do.
Following concerns raised by a resident, Great Grimby MP Lia Nici, Cllr Stewart Swinburn, the Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport, and local elections candidate for the Heneage ward, Mark Smith, visited Love Lane Corner to speak with the resident in person.
Eight years ago, a car crashed through the homeowner’s front wall and into the living room. Since then, bollards have been erected and traffic flows well around the roundabout, but speeding drivers still cause problems.
Ms Nici explained: “They come from the direction of Clee Road, and the roundabout becomes a ramp. This puts properties at risk. The worst-case scenario is a car losing control and ending up in a front garden.
“There is a further issue, of families going to school nearby and using the crossing which is too small to accommodate prams and people.”
The resident who raised the concerns has had to have their front wall rebuilt and reinforced.
They said: “Two to three weeks ago there were eight boy racers, all together, in a row. When you hear a car engine rev, it makes you nervous. It’s all the time.
“Then there are cyclists who come past driveways on a wide footpath, not aware that there are drives – or not paying attention to the fact – and that cars use them.”
Cllr Swinburn, Ms Nici and Mr Smith discussed the issues with the resident, and inspected the area.
Cllr Swinburn said: “Highways has already been here to do a report and they believe everything we can do has been done.
“However, we do listen to our residents and we are all here today to what, if anything more, can be carried out. We are always here to listen to concerns and will always do what we can.
“There is the possibility of extra signage, warning motorists of the nearby school.”
Cllr Swinburn is to raise the issues at his regular Highways meeting.
“There are 272 traffic regulation orders around the borough,” he said. “This issue is happening all over. We can look at putting an order in place here too. Temporary mobile CCTV is also a possibility.”
He praised the newly-announced Cycle Superhighway running from Isaac’s Hill in Cleethorpes to Bradley Road, in Grimsby – a route which incorporates Clee Road and Love Lane corner.
“Extra provisions are being made to slow people down on Clee Road as part of this,” he said, “and it’s happening because of additional Government funding thanks to Lia Nici campaigning for it.
Work has begun on the Cycle Superhighway scheme, which will see the construction of 3.8km of new off-road cycleway. It was awarded £2.2m of Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership funding, and an additional £400,000 is being contributed by the council and the private sector.
