Cleethorpes public realm improvements continue

Cleethorpes public realm improvements continue

SEPTEMBER sees the start of vital road safety improvements being made to one of the Cleethorpes’ main thoroughfares.

As part of the third phase of the Cleethorpes public realm improvement project, the junction of Sea Road / Alexandra Road is to be upgraded.

This road safety scheme, part of the Local Transport Plan, will start on Monday, September 9 and take approximately 3 months to complete – timed to mark the end of the school holidays and the very busy summer period as well as after the Festival of the Sky running throughout the previous weekend. There will be a break in the works over the October half term.

The present roundabout, adjacent to Dolphin Gardens, is to be upgraded so that it meets current standards. In addition, a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing will replace the raised pedestrian crossing in the road currently outside Seaway Chip Shop. This will be installed around 40 metres from the new roundabout, outside Pier Gardens. The zebra crossing on the other side of the roundabout will remain.

The central traffic island and roundabout will be landscaped.

Motorists are advised that during this phase of the project, traffic will generally use the junction as normal with some lane closures in operation and localised traffic management. Buses will operate as usual.

Additionally:

  • For a short period in October it will be necessary to establish a one way system using Market Street as a diversion route
  • Towards the end of these works, it will be necessary to close Market Street for a short period to allow the works to be carried out
  • The carriageway will be resurfaced under night time road closures.

Access to Sea Road will be maintained at all times except during the night time resurfacing.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, Cabinet member for highways, said: “This is a scheme that’s needed doing for a while to make it safer for all road users. By leaving the start until after the Festival of the Sky, and by suspending the works over the half term, we’re making sure that the impact on traders in the resort is minimised.”

Alexandra Road / Sea View Street

Meanwhile, mid-September will also see work start further down Alexandra Road – along an 80-metre stretch that runs at the top of Sea View Street. These works run alongside the works at the top of Sea View Street. Doing both at the same time makes sure that disruption to business activity on the street is minimised as much as possible, and works are carried out together to maximise efficiency.

As part of this project, which will last for around three months, new granite kerbs and York stone paving will be laid.

Traffic signal controls will be in place, and motorists are warned to expect delays.

All businesses on Sea View Street are open as usual, and the best parking to get to local businesses is at Wardall Street car park, accessed from Cambridge Street.

Councillor John Fenty, Cabinet member for regeneration, said: “The works are progressing well on Sea View Street and we’re nearly at the half way point. We’ve been working closely with the traders on the street to make sure they’re affected as little as possible. Often there is no gain without pain. These are long term infrastructure schemes that will allow future generations to benefit from and enjoy what our predecessors did, so please bear with us while we endeavour to minimise disruption.”

This work, along with that currently on Sea View Street, forms part of the major improvement works currently going on across the whole of Cleethorpes, funded by the Coastal Communities Fund, and managed by North East Lincolnshire Council’s regeneration partner ENGIE.
