North East Lincolnshire Council and its regeneration partner, ENGIE, has successfully secured an additional £462,000 of funding from the Department of Transport to continue the work improving sustainable travel across the borough.
North East Lincolnshire Council has also committed an additional £264,000 as part of the cash boost for the project.
The funding will allow a number of projects to continue for the next year and aim to:
- Ease access for local communities to travel to areas of employment.
- Improve access to education, training and employment opportunities.
- Improve road safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
- Improve health and wellbeing through cycling and walking.
- Reduce carbon emissions across North East Lincolnshire.
- Reduce traffic congestion levels across North East Lincolnshire.
- Widen opportunities to access sustainable travel in the borough.
These will all be achieved through the continuation of several different projects and initiatives including: Pedal to Work, Pedal for Equality and Health, Pedal for School, Get Connected through Travel Planning, Get to Work and Get on Board.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “In 2017, the council initially secured £1.4 million of funding from the Department of Transport to improve sustainable travel across the borough. Over the past three years, much work has taken place in the community.
“In 2018/19 alone, transport officers handed out travel planning and advice to more than 8,500 local people, delivered bikeability courses to more than 1,000 year five pupils and implemented 15 travel plans to local organisations.
“We are delighted to have secured this additional funding to continue this work which is benefitting the whole of North East Lincolnshire and is the driving force for many of the area’s sustainable travel projects.
“Alongside our exciting regeneration activities taking place, the success of funding bids like this one are key to North East Lincolnshire’s economic growth.”
