St James’s Square plan is costing nothing to taxpayer

A scheme to improve St James’s Square in Grimsby is costing the taxpayer nothing.

The money for this scheme is from capital funding specifically earmarked for it, with most of it coming from Government sources at no cost whatsoever to council tax payers in North East Lincolnshire.

The scheme – which will see CCTV and lighting improvements, and enhanced landscaping – has now been approved by NELC.

Contrary to false reports on social media, the Fisherman’s Memorial is not being moved; it is being placed on a plinth to give it greater prominence.

Councillor Philip Jackson, leader of the council, clarified: “The money is not allowed to be used for street cleaning, weed clearing, bin emptying or public toilets. It comes on the back of the Town Deal, which is also being supported financially by central government.

“It took a Conservative government to enter into a Town Deal with NELC and partners and provide substantial financial support. None of this ever happened during the days of Labour Governments between 1997 and 2010.”
