White Palm controversy is a ‘good thing’, says leader

The proposed White Palm sculpture for Cleethorpes has divided opinion – and NELC has welcomed the debate.

As reported, plans have been drawn up for a scheme to transform the North Prom, in Cleethorpes, into a living art gallery – with a twist.

A 72-ft white palm tree sculpture will tower over the coast, and visitors will admire dynamic swirling illuminations, use fitness street furniture and take in the longest outdoor contemporary visual gallery in the UK.

Subject to planning permission, the scheme has developed from a grant awarded by the Coastal Communities Fund. The money cannot be used on anything but projects to improve the area’s arts and culture offer.

Councillor Philip Jackson, the leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, told a recent meeting at Grimsby Town Hall: “Public art can divide opinion, but if people are engaging and talking about it, that can only be a good thing.

“The White Palm proposal is causing a stir but is already raising the profile of our resort and borough. I’m sure it will attract more visitors to the North Prom in particular, a part of the resort which, to date, has enjoyed less public investment.

“I can remember when the Angel of the North was first contemplated; it was not universally popular – but look how it’s regarded now!”
